The Bishop of Turku, Kari Mäkinen, has been narrowly elected the new Archbishop of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mäkinen replaces current Archbishop Jukka Paarma in June 2010.
Dockworkers, who have been on stike all week, demonstrated in Helsinki on March 11. Efforts to reach a settlement continued on Friday.
World-renowned Finnish molecular geneticist Leena Peltonen-Palotie died of cancer at the age of 57 on March 11. She studied the genetics behind numerous diseases including schizophrenia, obesity and heart disease.
Soprano Karita Mattila of Finland sings in "Emilie", an opera by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, at the Lyon Opera House in France. Performances continue until March 13.
Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt (red tie) met students at the Åland Secondary School during his visit to the Åland Archipelago off of southwestern Finland on March 10. Reinfeldt was invited to tour Åland by the regional government.
